Red Rock Tap + Grill, located on Wharf Avenue in Red Bank, was a recent stop for drinks and appetizers. The atmosphere, though subdued on this particular weeknight, hinted at a normally vibrant setting, according to prior accounts.

The highlight of the evening was the expertly crafted cocktails. A Maker’s Mark Manhattan, ordered on the rocks, was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweet vermouth. The bartender also impressed with a recommendation for a Rumrunner, a delightful blend of rums and juices. The “Beer of the Day,” a robust IPA, was also a satisfying choice.

The appetizer selection proved equally enticing. The coconut shrimp were a standout, cooked to a satisfying crisp and complemented by a flavorful mango salsa and sweet chili sauce drizzle. While slightly overdone, the shrimp remained delicious. The bacon cheeseburger lollipops, essentially risotto balls filled with ground beef, bacon, and cheese, were an interesting concept. Served with coleslaw and pickles, and drizzled with ketchup and mustard, they provided a hearty and satisfying bar snack, although the bacon flavor was somewhat subdued. The lollipop presentation, while novel, proved a bit challenging to eat.

Overall, Red Rock Tap + Grill delivered a positive first impression. The comfortable bar area, skilled bartenders, and well-executed drinks and appetizers earned a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the location. A future visit to sample more of the menu, particularly “The Piglet” sandwich with its intriguing combination of roasted pork loin, prosciutto paste, broccoli rabe, Provolone, and vodka sauce, is definitely warranted. Red Rock Tap + Grill holds promise as a true gem in the Red Bank dining scene.
