Reaching the Table Rock Trailhead
The Table Rock trailhead is located within Pisgah National Forest, approximately 9.5 miles from Highway 181 in Burke County. The final 7 miles are on a rugged, one-lane gravel road (FR 1264) unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. You’ll pass the Hawksbill Mountain trailhead about five miles before reaching the Table Rock parking area, equipped with picnic tables and a large information board marking the trailhead. Primitive campsites are available near the parking area.

Hiking to the Summit of Table Rock NC
The 2.2-mile roundtrip hike to Table Rock’s summit is strenuous, featuring steep climbs. However, the panoramic views of Linville Gorge from the 3,930-foot peak are well worth the effort. The trail has a few forks; stay right about half a mile in where a side trail descends to the left. At the summit, a narrow path leads to a massive boulder overlooking Hawksbill Mountain and the gorge. Continuing along the main trail offers numerous breathtaking vistas and ideal picnic spots along the rim. The road to the summit is generally open from April to December.

Exploring Nearby Trails
Extend your adventure by hiking nearby Hawksbill Mountain, accessible from the same parking area. The Mountain-to-Sea Trail, also originating from the parking area, leads to the unique Chimneys rock formations. For a different perspective of Linville Gorge, consider hiking Shortoff Mountain. Wiseman’s View, located on the opposite side of the gorge, offers stunning views of Table Rock.
Getting to Table Rock and Camping Information
Table Rock is approximately 70 miles from Asheville. The most direct route is via I-40 East to Marion, then U.S. 221 North to the Linville Falls area, followed by Highway 183 to Highway 181. Travel south on Highway 181 for three miles to Gingercake Road (the second Gingercake Road intersection). Turn onto Gingercake Road and stay left onto Road 1264 (follow Table Rock signs). The road becomes unpaved after a mile and continues for seven miles to the trailhead.
Camping is permitted in designated areas, but a permit is required on weekends (Friday-Sunday) and holidays from May 1st to October 31st.
