The iconic Rock It Grill in Alexandria, Virginia, has been a local favorite for over three decades. A Neighborhood Institution Evolves

Originally a country-western themed establishment called GW’s, Rock It Grill rebranded in 1997 and quickly became known for its nightly karaoke, a unique offering in Alexandria at the time. The venue also hosted popular Halloween parties and other events, solidifying its place in the community.

Karaoke Continues with Safety First

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Rock It Grill has reopened its doors with a focus on safety. Karaoke is now offered Wednesday through Saturday, with a plexiglass screen protecting the DJ. Song requests are taken in writing by staff to minimize contact. Owner Laura Seiss emphasizes the supportive atmosphere, noting that “everybody cheers for everybody with the karaoke.” This welcoming environment extends to newcomers, who are readily embraced by the regulars.

More Than Just a Bar

For many, Rock It Grill is more than just a place to grab a drink and sing. Roger Vasilas, owner of nearby The Lamplighter, is a regular lunchtime patron, drawn to the familiar faces and comfortable atmosphere. He describes the grill as a place where “I know everybody here. I can have a conversation about anything with anybody here.” This sentiment is echoed by manager Hana Harris, who describes the establishment as having a “Cheers” vibe, where everyone knows your name.

Navigating the Pandemic

The pandemic has presented significant financial challenges. Seiss acknowledges struggling with rent payments but has prioritized paying her landlord a portion of the government loan monies received. The restaurant has also diligently followed ALX Promise accreditation guidelines through the Alexandria Health Department, implementing rigorous cleaning protocols and safety measures to protect staff and customers. Seiss emphasizes that Rock It Grill “is not a takeout kind of place,” highlighting the importance of the in-person experience for its patrons.

Rock It Grill’s Enduring Appeal

Rock It Grill’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to adapt and maintain its core values of community and entertainment. While some aspects of the experience have temporarily changed, the heart of Rock It Grill remains: a place where people come together to enjoy good food, good company, and a good time. The resilience of the staff and the loyalty of its customers ensure that Rock It Grill will continue to be a beloved Alexandria institution for years to come.
