As you approach City of Rocks State Park, you’ll journey along peaceful highways and paved roads, perhaps passing by Faywood Hot Springs, a charming resort known for its natural hot springs. The park itself remains hidden until you are almost at its entrance, where suddenly a breathtaking panorama of massive boulders emerges, seemingly melting into one another. This impressive formation is composed of volcanic rock, sculpted over millennia by the relentless forces of wind and water, resulting in the smooth, rounded surfaces that define City of Rocks.

Upon arrival, a visit to the visitor center is highly recommended. Here, park rangers provide valuable insights, up-to-date information, maps, and souvenirs. For visitors with pets, like myself and my two dogs, it’s a great opportunity to inquire about any specific considerations. During my visit, I learned about recent mountain lion sightings and the presence of elk and bear in the area, reminding me to keep a watchful eye on my canine companions, Cool Whip and Herc. The rangers, upon meeting my well-sized dogs, jokingly reassured me they were likely less of a concern compared to smaller breeds.

Camping Under the Stars at City of Rocks State Park NM
Choosing a campsite at City of Rocks State Park is a delightful task, as every spot offers its own charm. Following a ranger’s helpful advice to find a less windy location, we settled into our site. Engaging with the park rangers is always beneficial; their expertise allows them to offer valuable tips you might not otherwise consider, enhancing your overall experience at City of Rocks.
Camping fees are reasonably priced at $10.00 per night. While some campsites are reservable through Reserve America, many operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Visiting outside of peak season, and without needing electrical hook-ups, I opted for the convenient first-come-first-served options.
Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring. Garbage cans are conveniently located throughout the campground, and pit toilets are readily available. For those seeking more comfort, the visitor center provides flush toilets and showers.

Embracing Disconnection: Cell Reception at City of Rocks
One aspect to be aware of is cell reception – it’s limited within most of City of Rocks State Park. This digital disconnect can be a blessing in disguise, encouraging you to truly immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
During my visit, a sudden downpour began just as I arrived at my campsite, before I could even set up my tent. Necessity became the mother of invention, and my vehicle transformed into a temporary shelter. Repositioning gear, inflating sleeping pads, and unfurling sleeping bags, I created a cozy refuge inside my car. This unexpected downtime allowed me to relax and listen to downloaded podcasts. Serendipitously, I stumbled upon an episode of “Wild Ideas Worth Living,” “How to Unplug with Danny Kim,” which resonated perfectly with the experience of being in a place with limited connectivity. The podcast explored the need to disconnect and strategies for doing so, prompting reflection on our reliance on technology.
When the sun reappeared, and I inadvertently found a cell signal while hiking, I consciously resisted the urge to immediately engage with social media. Ignoring the initial notifications, I silenced my phone and challenged myself to use it solely for photography until departing City of Rocks the next day. This intentional digital detox proved to be remarkably refreshing, allowing for a deeper connection with the present moment and the beauty of the park.

A Dog-Friendly Paradise: Exploring City of Rocks with Your Furry Friends
City of Rocks State Park is exceptionally dog-friendly. After the rain subsided, we eagerly explored the park, discovering that dogs are welcome everywhere except inside buildings. While there are designated trails, we spent most of our time scrambling and exploring the countless nooks and crannies among the boulders. This natural playground offered endless entertainment for both humans and dogs, making it a perfect destination for pet owners.
Whether City of Rocks State Park is your primary destination or a stopover on a longer journey through southern New Mexico, I wholeheartedly recommend it. Following a backcountry camping trip to White Sands National Park, spending a night at City of Rocks was a fantastic experience. I am already looking forward to my next opportunity to visit this captivating New Mexico state park.
