Welcome to Rock Island Trail State Park, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking accessible, nonmotorized trail experiences. As a key part of Missouri State Parks’ expanding rail-to-trail system, the Rock Island Trail promises to connect seamlessly with Jackson County and the renowned Katy Trail State Park, eventually forming a vital link in a statewide trail network stretching from Kansas City to St. Louis.
Currently, the developed section of the Rock Island Trail, formerly the Rock Island Spur of the Katy Trail, invites public exploration. This 47.5-mile stretch from Pleasant Hill to Windsor, Missouri, offers a taste of the adventures to come. Please note that the 144-mile undeveloped corridor extending from Windsor to Beaufort remains closed for public use until further development is completed. Looking ahead, plans are in motion to incorporate a 12.6-mile “rail with trail” section from Beaufort to Union, further expanding the trail’s reach.
With convenient trailheads at Pleasant Hill, Leeton, Chilhowee, and Medford, and an additional access point in Windsor, the open section of the Rock Island Trail carves through the scenic heart of west-central Missouri. This accessible trail welcomes bicyclists, hikers, and equestrian riders alike, providing a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, delve into rural Missouri’s rich history, and enjoy exceptional outdoor recreation.
As you journey along the Rock Island Trail, you’ll traverse landscapes that whisper tales of the past. Pass through charming small towns that once thrived alongside the railway, and travel across lands historically inhabited by Native American tribes like the Osage Nation. Prepare to be captivated by the diverse scenery, ranging from expansive prairielike vistas and picturesque farm fields to dense, shady woodlands. The trail also gracefully crosses several streams and rivers, adding to the natural beauty of your adventure.
