Lake Tahoe’s Stateline is witnessing a significant transformation in its hospitality landscape as the former Hard Rock Hotel is undergoing a major renovation to emerge as the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe. This ambitious project signals a new chapter for the property, promising upgraded facilities and enhanced guest experiences.
Under the new ownership of Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta, who acquired the property in March 2023, the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe is set to receive a comprehensive makeover. Jason Sides, the hotel-casino’s general manager, revealed to the Nevada Gaming Control Board that the renovation will encompass virtually every aspect of the 500-room establishment. This extensive overhaul aims to revitalize the iconic location and align it with the Golden Nugget brand known for its luxury and entertainment offerings.
The renovation is currently underway, with one of the hotel’s two towers temporarily closed to facilitate the upgrades. The project is anticipated to reach completion between late 2025 and early 2026, marking a significant milestone for Lake Tahoe’s tourism sector. Guests can look forward to a completely reimagined property, from redesigned rooms to state-of-the-art amenities.
Adding to the allure of the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe will be the introduction of two new dining experiences. Mastro’s Steak House and Saltgrass Steak House, both acclaimed restaurants within Fertitta’s Landry’s portfolio, are slated to open at the resort. Saltgrass Steak House is expected to welcome guests as early as September, offering a taste of the culinary enhancements to come. These new dining options are poised to elevate the gastronomic offerings in Stateline, making the Golden Nugget a dining destination in its own right.
The location of the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe holds a rich history in the region. Originally opened as the Sahara Tahoe in 1965, the property has undergone several transformations, including its rebranding as the Hard Rock Hotel in 2015. This latest transition to the Golden Nugget brand represents another evolution for this landmark location on Highway 50, near the California border.
Despite ongoing renovations, the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe is already experiencing positive momentum. General Manager Sides noted a significant surge in business in recent weeks, indicating strong interest and traffic to the casino. This positive trend suggests a bright future for the renovated Golden Nugget as it prepares to fully re-enter the Lake Tahoe market. The transformation from Hard Rock Hotel to Golden Nugget is eagerly anticipated, promising a revitalized destination that will contribute significantly to Lake Tahoe’s vibrant tourism industry.
