School of Rock: San Antonio Set to Electrify with Broadway Hit Musical

Get ready to unleash your inner rockstar, San Antonio! The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre is preparing to be transformed into a stage of high-voltage energy as San Antonio Broadway Theatre (SABT), in collaboration with The Majestic Empire Foundation, proudly presents “School of Rock”. This isn’t just any performance; it’s a full-throttle, Broadway-caliber rendition of the beloved musical comedy, based on the iconic Jack Black movie that captured hearts worldwide. Mark your calendars for January 17–19, 2025, because this is one show you absolutely cannot miss!

Directed by the visionary Logan Epstein, this professional production of “School of Rock” promises to deliver an electrifying experience that will leave you breathless. Featuring a phenomenal score by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, “School of Rock” the musical brings to life the story of Dewey Finn, a wannabe rockstar who hilariously stumbles into a substitute teaching position and transforms his classroom of straight-A students into a mind-blowing rock band.

Leading this incredible cast is Tanner Berry, who is stepping into the shoes of the unforgettable Dewey Finn. Berry, who previously wowed audiences in SABT’s “Rock of Ages,” is sure to bring his signature charisma and vocal prowess to this leading role. Alongside him, the exceptionally talented Alexis Semevolos-Velzquez will portray Rosalie Mullins. Semevolos-Velzquez, a crowd favorite from past SABT productions like “Cabaret,” “Rent,” and “Rock of Ages,” is anticipated to deliver another stellar performance. Adding to the dynamic cast are Jack Ducat and Alexandra Shepherd, taking on the roles of Ned Schneebly and Patty, respectively, promising to add layers of humor and depth to the production.

However, the true heart and soul of “School of Rock” lie in its astonishingly talented young cast. Brace yourselves to be completely blown away by 13 prodigious young actor-musicians hailing from prestigious institutions such as the Northeast School of the Arts, Folks Middle School, Keystone School, Helotes Elementary School, St. Mary’s Hall, and various homeschool programs. These are not just actors; they are genuine instrumentalists who will be rocking out LIVE on stage!

This phenomenal youth ensemble includes Hudson Aikens as James, Madison Aikens as the academically ambitious Summer Hathaway, Viviane Atencio embodying the powerful vocals of Tomika Spencer-Williams, Eliana Behred as Shonelle, and Mandolin Binstead as Sophie. Further enriching the band are Max Dresser as Mason, Evelyn Harrison as Madison, Ricardo Martinez as the budding guitarist Zach Mooneyham, Clara Sankey as the cool bassist Katie, and Grant Tuder as the keyboard virtuoso Lawrence. Valeria Velasco takes on the role of Marcy, Max Voris brings the energy as Freddy Hamilton, and Benjamin Walk embodies Billy Sanford. Arielena Reyna joins this vibrant group in the Ensemble, and the production is further amplified by the talents of Joshua Cook, Daniela Landa-Gonzalez, Brian Hodges, Georgie Lee, Salomon Lopez, Ray Seams, Ellen Sisley, Olivia Roth, and Shelby Ward in the wider ensemble.

Behind the scenes, a brilliant creative team is working to bring “School of Rock” to life. Under the expert direction and choreography of Logan Epstein and the musical direction of Austin Kimble, the production boasts breathtaking lighting design by MacKenzie Mulligan, a captivating set designed by Carlos Nine, vibrant costumes by Lauren Cosio Kotkowski, and is expertly stage managed by Ruben Cruz.

“School of Rock” is highly recommended for audience members aged 10 and above, due to some mature content and adult language that is inherent to the rock and roll theme. The show has a run time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, which includes an intermission, making it a perfect evening out for families and rock music enthusiasts alike. Prepare to be inspired by the sheer talent and infectious energy of “School of Rock” – it’s an unforgettable theatrical experience waiting to happen in San Antonio!
