Explore the Features of Our Rock Climbing Wall
Our impressive rock climbing wall stands approximately 30 feet tall and provides a diverse range of climbing experiences. We offer numerous top rope and lead climbing routes, along with a variety of bouldering problems. To simulate the challenges of outdoor rock faces and enhance your training, each route is marked with colored tape, indicating different paths and difficulty levels.
We utilize the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) to rate our top rope routes, ranging from 5.6 (beginner-friendly) to 5.12 (expert level), ensuring there’s a suitable challenge for everyone. For bouldering enthusiasts, we have dedicated problems up to 12 feet high. These routes, while shorter and without ropes, often present more intricate and powerful moves. Bouldering problems are graded using the “V” Scale, from V0 (beginner) to V6 (advanced), offering a progressive challenge as you improve your skills and strength.
Essential Policies for a Safe and Enjoyable Climb
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all climbers, we require adherence to the following policies. Failure to comply may result in dismissal from the rock climbing wall and potential suspension of gym access.
General Climbing Wall Policies
- Access Passes: All individuals wishing to boulder or climb must possess either a valid Climbing Wall Year Pass or a Climbing Wall Day Pass. Non-members of the Mort Harris RFC who opt for a Day Pass must also purchase a guest pass and adhere to our guest policy.
- Waiver Requirement: All climbers are required to sign a waiver, which will be kept on file for the duration of their membership.
- Belay Check Certification: Before engaging in top rope climbing, all participants must successfully pass a Belay Check administered by the qualified Mort Harris RFC staff. This ensures competency in belaying techniques and safety procedures.
- Operating Hours: The rock climbing wall is open during the Fall and Winter Semesters from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. Summer Semester hours may vary and will be updated on our website accordingly. Staff are available during these hours to conduct Belay Checks.
- Footwear Policy: Bare feet are strictly prohibited at the rock climbing wall. Socks are permitted.
- Daily Sign-In: All patrons are required to sign in daily on the Climbing Wall Sign-in Sheet located at the climbing wall desk for attendance tracking and safety protocols.
Bouldering Specific Policies
- Bouldering Height Limit: When bouldering, climbers are restricted to a maximum height of the white line, which is set at 12 feet. This policy is in place to minimize risk and ensure a safe bouldering environment.
Top Rope Climbing Specific Policies
- Staff Belay Assistance: Mort Harris Recreation & Fitness Center staff are available to provide belay assistance if needed, especially for beginners or those seeking guidance.
- Belayer Anchoring: Belayers must be anchored at all times while managing the rope for a climber. This is a crucial safety measure in top rope climbing.
