Exploring the Beach at Face Rock: A Coastal Treasure

The beach at Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint is truly a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. For our family, it was our first stop along the Oregon Coast, and the panoramic vista from the parking lot, with its scattering of sea stacks against the vast ocean, immediately signaled something special. A short, well-marked trail leads from the parking area down to the beach, inviting you to explore its wonders.

Arriving at low tide revealed a beach teeming with natural treasures. Tide pools glistened with marine life, and the receding waters left behind fascinating remnants of the ocean’s rhythm. Our children were immediately captivated, one discovering a cluster of mussels that created a unique rattling sound, while another ventured into the small tunnels and shallow caves formed by the dramatic sea stacks. Even our youngest was enthralled by the abundant driftwood scattered across the sand.

Venturing further, my older children and I attempted to explore the intertidal caves closer to the water’s edge. However, we were unprepared with water shoes, and the rocky terrain proved challenging barefoot. We observed other visitors who were better equipped navigating these areas with ease. (Remember to consult a 2023 tide chart to plan your exploration safely and be mindful of the tides). Despite our footwear mishap, we discovered smaller caves and tunnels further from the water that were equally exciting to explore. The kids delighted in running across the small dunes and delving into every nook and cranny they could find.

Time seemed to slip away as we immersed ourselves in the beauty of Face Rock beach. As the sun began to set, the temperature dropped, signaling our departure. Though I wished for more photos, the joy of experiencing this new place with my family overshadowed the need for pictures. Reluctantly, we left, wishing we had allocated more time to fully appreciate Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint. It truly is a hidden treasure that’s easily missed if you’re not aware of its existence.

My only regrets were not bringing sand toys for the children and not having the opportunity to return to Face Rock before continuing our journey up the coast. It’s an ideal beach for a full day of family fun if time allows. However, our next destination, Heceta Head Lighthouse, also offered its own charming beach and breathtaking lighthouse views, continuing our Oregon Coast adventure.

If you’re planning a trip to the Oregon Coast, I highly recommend adding Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint to your itinerary. It’s an unforgettable stop that showcases the raw beauty and captivating allure of the Oregon coastline.
