Hugh Lowder Parker Obituary – Rock Hill, SC, Resident and Dedicated Engineer

WADESBORO, NC – Hugh Lowder Parker, a long-time resident of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at the age of 92. His passing marks the end of a well-lived life, characterized by his dedication to family, his professional accomplishments as a mechanical engineer, and his passion for genealogy and gardening.

A graveside service to celebrate Hugh’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Rocky Mount Baptist Church Cemetery in Polkton, NC. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the cemetery.

Born on May 3, 1930, in Mecklenburg County, NC, Hugh was the son of the late Isaac Sampson Parker and Bettie Lillie Lowder Parker. He proudly graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and was a member of the inaugural class of Charlotte College, now known as the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Furthering his education, Hugh also attended North Carolina State University to study engineering, laying the foundation for his successful career.

Hugh dedicated 35 years of his professional life to Celanese as a mechanical engineer. During this time, he and his wife established their home and actively participated in the Rock Hill, SC community. His contributions to Celanese and his engagement within Rock Hill reflect his commitment to both his profession and his community.

He is lovingly remembered by his children: Craig Parker (Vicki) of Midlothian, VA, Gail Chapp (Robert) of Iron Station, NC, and Martin Parker (Tara) of Goose Creek, SC. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Ashley Thompson, Stephen Parker, Hannah Huitt, Kaitlen Todd, Gretchen Parker, Jesse Parker, and Maggie Parker, and his great-grandchildren, Joel Huitt and Roman Todd. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and their families who will cherish his memory.

Beyond his professional and family life, Hugh was an avid genealogist. He dedicated countless hours to family research, exploring cemeteries and courthouses to uncover his family history. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for gardening, with a particular fondness for azaleas, rhododendrons, and lilies.

Hugh was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty Harrison Parker, and his brothers, Jennings Parker, Alton Parker, and Flake Parker. His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to his caregiver, Ivory Ingram, for her compassionate care and support during her time with him.
