Just a stone’s throw from the iconic Devil’s Lake State Park, Balanced Rock Winery offers a delightful escape in the Baraboo area. Since opening its doors in 2019, this winery has become a beloved destination, inviting guests to unwind amidst stunning hillside scenery with ample indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for leisurely afternoons or evenings of wine appreciation and relaxation.
Named in homage to a prominent bluff rock formation and its proximity to Devil’s Lake, Balanced Rock Winery occupies a spacious 6,000-square-foot facility set on 22 acres of urban land. The winery’s design, a chic blend of red and white industrial barn aesthetics, subtly nods to Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage. Visitors are often greeted by the owners and winemakers themselves, Matt and Kristin Boegne, along with their charming Bernese Mountain dogs, adding a personal touch to the experience. Matt and Kristin transitioned from corporate careers to pursue their passion for winemaking, drawing on Matt’s background in chemistry and hospitality. Their philosophy, “life in balance is a life well lived,” is palpable throughout the winery, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all who visit.
Balanced Rock Winery boasts an impressive selection of approximately 20 wines, encompassing red, white, and rosé varieties. They cultivate their own red Frontenac grapes and source additional grapes from select vineyards in Wisconsin, Washington, and New York. Winemaker Matt Boegne’s guiding principle is centered on grape quality and optimal winemaking practices, ensuring each bottle reflects the best possible expression of the fruit. Wine enthusiasts can explore a diverse range of dry reds, including the Anastasia, a cabernet noted for its robust oak and blackberry nuances, and the Trinity, a harmonious medium to full-bodied blend of Syrah, cabernet, and merlot grapes. The Josephine, a smoky and oak-infused Syrah, also stands out as a popular red choice. White wine aficionados can indulge in options ranging from sweeter selections like the La Crescent to drier profiles such as the Seyval, a top-seller at the Wisconsin State Fair wine garden, celebrated for its crisp apple, lemon, and grapefruit notes. Guests are invited to sample wine flights, choosing any four wines, or enjoy creatively crafted wine cocktails. Complementing the wine offerings, a curated selection of craft and domestic beers is also available.
