Explore the Preserve: Horseback Riding and Trails
Big Rock Forest Preserve, home to the campground, is also known for its excellent horseback riding area. Horse trails primarily consist of natural surface mowed grass paths, providing a scenic and enjoyable ride. Limestone screenings and asphalt bike trails are also available within some parts of the preserve and are shared with hikers, bikers, and dog walkers. Equestrian users are required to stay on marked, forest preserve-maintained trails and are restricted from riding in natural areas, Illinois Nature Preserves, picnic areas, or farmed zones. Trail closures may occur during wet weather to prevent damage, with signage posted at preserve entrances to indicate trail status. Currently, trails are OPEN for equestrian use at Big Rock Preserve.
Big Rock Campground was made possible in part by funding from the IDNR OSLAD and Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant, highlighting its commitment to providing quality outdoor recreational opportunities.
