Gideon, arrived in 1918 and played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s infrastructure as the general contractor for the State Game Lodge. His contributions continued as he managed the Lodge for 27 years and was instrumental in developing iconic roadways like the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Gideon’s architectural vision also left its mark on landmarks such as the Artist Studio at Mt. Rushmore and the Coolidge Inn in Custer State Park. When Art and Marilyn returned to the Black Hills in 1988, they rekindled their shared passion for this unique landscape. Rushmore Society, Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers, and the Keystone Fire District Board. Her leadership and dedication strengthen the local tourism landscape, benefiting both visitors and residents alike.
Art’s legacy extends to his passionate advocacy for the preservation of the Black Hills. Recognized in the U.S. Congressional Record in 1995 for his efforts to maintain the lighting at Mt. Rushmore, he also secured funding to protect it from potential government shutdowns. Beyond advocacy, Art was a talented photographer, capturing the magic of Mt. Rushmore in unique ways. His pioneering photograph of fireworks over Mt. Rushmore graced the memorial’s dining room for four years. His breathtaking image, “Comet Hale-Bopp Over Mt.
