Discover the Legacy of Buffalo Rock Lodge: Your Black Hills Retreat

Buffalo Rock Lodge, a cherished bed and breakfast nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, South Dakota, offers more than just a stay – it provides an immersive experience steeped in local history and breathtaking views. Founded in 1998 by Art and Marilyn Oakes, Buffalo Rock Lodge opened its doors in 1999, quickly becoming a haven for travelers seeking a personal connection with the Black Hills and the iconic Mt. Rushmore. Marilyn Oakes continues to warmly welcome guests, ensuring the legacy of Buffalo Rock Lodge thrives, supported by her family and dedicated seasonal staff.

Marilyn’s deep-rooted passion for the region’s history infuses every aspect of the lodge. She eagerly shares captivating stories of the early days, enriching the visitor experience beyond the typical tourist trail. Her late husband, Art, who passed away in 2014, shared this love for the Black Hills’ natural beauty. He delighted in guiding guests to hidden gems and unique perspectives often missed by mainstream tourism, fostering a deeper appreciation for the area’s flora and fauna. This personal touch, deeply embedded in the Buffalo Rock Lodge philosophy, ensures every guest feels like a welcomed friend.

The Oakes family’s connection to the Black Hills extends back generations. Marilyn’s grandfather, C.C. Gideon, arrived in 1918 and played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s infrastructure as the general contractor for the State Game Lodge. His contributions continued as he managed the Lodge for 27 years and was instrumental in developing iconic roadways like the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Gideon’s architectural vision also left its mark on landmarks such as the Artist Studio at Mt. Rushmore and the Coolidge Inn in Custer State Park. This rich family history intertwines with the very fabric of the Black Hills, adding a layer of depth to the Buffalo Rock Lodge experience.

When Art and Marilyn returned to the Black Hills in 1988, they rekindled their shared passion for this unique landscape. This love story culminated in the construction of Buffalo Rock Lodge in 1997 on land that has been in Marilyn’s family since 1932. The summer of 1999 marked the realization of their dream, welcoming the first guests to Buffalo Rock Lodge. Since then, over a thousand visitors annually have savored breakfast at the lodge, captivated by the unparalleled view of Mt. Rushmore. This stunning vista is a defining feature of Buffalo Rock Lodge, offering a memorable backdrop to every stay.

Marilyn’s commitment to the community and tourism industry is evident through her active participation in various boards, including Black Hills Badlands and Lakes, Visitor Industry Alliance, Mt. Rushmore Society, Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers, and the Keystone Fire District Board. Her leadership and dedication strengthen the local tourism landscape, benefiting both visitors and residents alike.

Art’s legacy extends to his passionate advocacy for the preservation of the Black Hills. Recognized in the U.S. Congressional Record in 1995 for his efforts to maintain the lighting at Mt. Rushmore, he also secured funding to protect it from potential government shutdowns. Beyond advocacy, Art was a talented photographer, capturing the magic of Mt. Rushmore in unique ways. His pioneering photograph of fireworks over Mt. Rushmore graced the memorial’s dining room for four years. His breathtaking image, “Comet Hale-Bopp Over Mt. Rushmore by Moonlight,” now adorns homes and businesses worldwide, a testament to his artistic vision and love for the region. Even after his passing, Art’s spirit remains a guiding force at Buffalo Rock Lodge.
