Exploring Castle Rock State Park: Activities and Trails
Castle Rock State Park serves as a crucial hub connecting 34 miles of rugged trails to an even more extensive network. This trail system seamlessly links the Santa Clara and San Lorenzo valleys to the renowned Skyline to the Sea Trail and the expansive Big Basin Redwoods State Park, offering unparalleled opportunities for long-distance adventures.
Hiking, Backpacking, and Horseback Riding: Immerse yourself in the park’s stunning scenery with miles of trails catering to all skill levels. Whether you’re planning a day hike or a multi-day backpacking trip, Castle Rock’s trails promise unforgettable experiences. Horseback riders can enjoy the Saratoga Toll Road, a historic path extending from Saratoga Gap all the way to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, offering a unique perspective of the park’s beauty.
Rock Climbing: Castle Rock is a celebrated destination for rock climbers, renowned for its distinctive “Tafone” sandstone formations. Climbers from around the globe are drawn to the challenge and unique texture of these rocks. However, it’s crucial to respect the integrity of this fragile landscape. Climbers are urged to avoid damaging the delicate sandstone, refraining from chipping, gluing, or altering the rock in any way. Climbing when the rock is wet is strongly discouraged as the sandstone becomes exceptionally fragile when damp and can dramatically alter climbing routes. Please note that climbing area use may be restricted due to weather conditions. Any measurable rainfall recorded at the Castle Rock Kirkwood Office could lead to a climbing facility closure for up to three days under District Superintendent Closure Order #715-002-20. Always check trail conditions before planning your climb.
