The thoughtful architecture of the Castle Rock Library extends beyond its visual appeal to enhance the user experience. Strategically placed outdoor courtyards on the east and west elevations act as welcoming entrances for visitors. These spaces also provide valuable open-air retreats, anticipating future urban development around the building and ensuring a connection to nature remains. Furthermore, the library’s design maximizes the breathtaking panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain foothills from the second floor, integrating the stunning Colorado landscape into the interior experience.
Significantly larger than its predecessor, the new Castle Rock Library boasts an impressive 17,000 square feet of additional space compared to the former library, which was housed in a repurposed grocery store for nearly two decades. Reflecting its commitment to the community, two-thirds of the library’s area is dedicated to public use. This includes expansive collection areas, versatile meeting and gathering spaces, and a dedicated reading room and archives for Douglas County. The remaining portion of the building accommodates the essential staff operations that ensure the smooth functioning of the entire library system.
The exterior of the Castle Rock Library pays homage to the rugged beauty of the Colorado landscape. Corrugated and weathered steel cladding evokes the textures and tones of the region, drawing inspiration from the Western vernacular architectural style. This distinctive pattern of corrugated and flat steel is ingeniously repeated inside the building, creating a striking contrast in bright white along the central lobby. This lobby serves as a spine, clearly dividing the community library spaces to the north from the administrative offices to the south. The warmth of wood, used on soffit undersides and within interior study areas, mirrors the texture and color of the weathered steel, creating a cohesive and inviting interior atmosphere. The library thoughtfully balances energy levels across its floors, with a tranquil and contemplative upper level contrasting the dynamic and vibrant event hall and youth services section on the ground floor.
The Castle Rock Library is more than just a building; it embodies a vision of community enrichment and exceeding expectations. As Bob Pasicznyuk, Executive Library Director, eloquently stated, the library strives to deliver “premium libraries, delivering more than the expected,” and to infuse “touches of magic into everything we do.” This commitment to excellence and community service is physically manifested in the thoughtful design and welcoming atmosphere of the Philip & Jerry Miller Library in Castle Rock, making it a true gem within the Douglas County Libraries system and a valuable asset to the Castle Rock community.
