Looking for a delightful outdoor activity that will thrill kids of all ages? If you’re in the Austin area and on the hunt for a charming train experience after the Zilker Zephyr’s closure, look no further than the Cedar Rock Railroad. Nestled within the expansive Williamson County Regional Park, the Cedar Rock Railroad offers a miniature train adventure perfect for families. On a recent Saturday afternoon, we decided to explore this local gem and were pleasantly surprised by the fun it offered. Arriving just before 4:15 p.m., we found the train preparing for its next departure – running conveniently at :15 and :45 past each hour. This gave us just enough time to purchase our tickets and hop aboard.
Family enjoying a train ride on Cedar Rock Railroad
We quickly realized the popularity of the Cedar Rock Railroad as the train was already filling up. Luckily, our family of five found seats together. Even if we had missed this ride and waited for the 4:45 p.m. departure, the park offers plenty to keep everyone entertained in the meantime.

The Cedar Rock Railroad train ride proved to be a highlight for our children. The covered seating is a fantastic feature, promising comfortable rides even on scorching Texas summer days. The 15-minute journey was perfectly timed – engaging enough for our two-year-old, yet surprisingly enjoyable for our older kids aged seven and ten. At just $3 per person (and free for babies under one), it’s an incredibly affordable treat.

From the train, we spotted a serene fishing pond, winding trails, and various sports facilities including soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, a football field, and a running track. The park was buzzing with activity on that Saturday afternoon, showcasing its appeal to the local community.

Our visit, focused on the train ride and a quick play at the playscape, lasted around 30 minutes. We noticed another attraction, the Little Locomotive ride, which also looked fun and could extend your visit.
