Seven Magic Mountains, a vibrant and monumental public art installation, bursts from the Nevada desert landscape with a breathtaking display of color. Located near Jean Dry Lake and Interstate 15, just south of Las Vegas, this captivating artwork features seven towering stacks of brightly painted boulders, each reaching over thirty feet high.
Created by internationally acclaimed Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, Seven Magic Mountains stands as a striking symbol of human interaction with the desert environment. Positioned within the Ivanpah Valley, the colorful rock formations are dramatically juxtaposed against the natural backdrop of Sheep Mountain and surrounding mountain ranges. This intentional placement amplifies the visual impact of the artwork, creating a powerful and poetic statement.
Originally scheduled as a two-year exhibit, opening in May 2016, Seven Magic Mountains quickly captivated audiences worldwide. The overwhelming popularity and critical acclaim led the artist and producers to pursue extending its presence. The Nevada Museum of Art and Art Production Fund, who collaborated to bring this project to life, are actively working to secure the installation’s long-term future at its current location. This ongoing effort ensures that visitors can continue to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of these Colorful Rocks for years to come.
The site, recently experiencing increased visitation, has reopened fully. Visitors are now welcome to explore the artwork up close and capture its vibrant essence through photography. While enjoying the colorful rock formations, guests are encouraged to leave no trace behind, preserving the pristine beauty of the surrounding natural environment. For those inspired to contribute to the site’s upkeep, donations are welcome.
