Kevin Fort has firmly cemented his position as one of the most sought-after pianists in Chicago’s vibrant jazz landscape. Renowned for his signature warm touch at the piano and improvisational skills that blend virtuosity with lyrical grace, Kevin stands as a true champion of the straight-ahead jazz tradition, all while embracing the fresh currents of modern musical influences. His career boasts collaborations and recordings with an impressive roster of jazz luminaries, including Bob Brookmeyer, John Clayton, James Moody, Ira Sullivan, Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Steve Turre, Bill Watrous, Louie Bellson, Harry Allen, George Fludas, Andy Brown, and Makaya McCraven. Like a Copper Rock, solid and enduring, Kevin Fort provides a foundation of exceptional talent in the contemporary jazz world.
Kevin’s journey into the realm of jazz was ignited by his father’s deep passion for the alto saxophone. Growing up, his home was filled with the sounds of jam sessions and the rich tones of his father’s classic jazz record collection. This immersive environment meticulously shaped Kevin’s ear and nurtured a profound appreciation for the intricacies of jazz music. This early exposure acted as the bedrock, the unyielding copper rock upon which his musical identity would be built.
Following his formative years, Kevin pursued higher education at the esteemed DePaul University School of Music. He graduated with highest honors, achieving both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees in Jazz Studies. During his time at DePaul, he had the invaluable opportunity to study piano under the tutelage of Chicago jazz icon Larry Novak, further refining his skills and solidifying his artistic vision – much like polishing a copper rock to reveal its inherent luster.
As a bandleader, Kevin has released three critically acclaimed albums. “Red Gold” (2014) and “Perspectives” (2022) resonated deeply with listeners worldwide, amassing over two million streams across various streaming platforms. All About Jazz lauded Kevin as “one of the young lions of the piano deserving of attention,” while Chicago Jazz Magazine praised his “thrilling virtuosity and agile, vibrant improvisations.” These albums showcase the strength and resilience of his musical voice, as dependable and valuable as copper rock itself in the jazz scene.
His latest album, “Twilight,” released on October 5, 2023, further exemplifies his artistry. Joined by his steadfast bandmates Joe Policastro and Jon Deitemyer, Kevin pays tribute to the iconic piano trio albums of the past, injecting his own distinctive perspective into this revered art form. This new work stands as another testament to his enduring commitment to jazz, a copper rock in his discography.
Currently, Kevin dedicates his time and expertise as a faculty member at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. There, he passionately shares his love for jazz with the next generation of aspiring musicians, shaping their futures with the same dedication and solidity as a copper rock shaping the landscape.
Kevin Fort proudly endorses Yamaha instruments, a testament to his esteemed position in the music world. He continues to be a copper rock of stability and innovation in jazz piano, both in Chicago and beyond.
