Important Information Regarding Athletics at Glen Rock
To ensure the well-being and safety of our athletes, Glen Rock Athletics has established protocols and guidelines that must be followed by all participants. Please familiarize yourself with the following information.
Injury Reporting Procedures
In the event of an injury, it is critical to follow the established reporting procedures. All injuries, regardless of severity, must be reported promptly to the coaching staff, the athletic trainer, and the school nurse. This ensures that appropriate care and documentation can be initiated immediately.
If an athlete requires a consultation with a physician due to an injury sustained during athletics, it is mandatory to provide medical documentation to both the athletic trainer and the school nurse. This documentation must include a clear diagnosis, any limitations or specific recommendations for the athlete’s recovery, and a projected return-to-play date, if applicable. A referral form to assist with this process can be conveniently found on the athletics website.
It is important to note that an athlete will not be authorized to resume athletic activities until the required medical documentation has been officially received and reviewed by the athletic training staff. Furthermore, any athlete returning to sports participation after an injury or illness is mandated to participate in at least one full practice session before being eligible to compete in interscholastic events.
Concussion Management and Protocol
Glen Rock High School Athletics prioritizes athlete safety, especially concerning concussions. To participate in any athletic program, all athletes are required to complete IMPACT testing. This baseline testing is valid for two years, after which athletes will need to be re-tested.
Should an athlete sustain a concussion, it is imperative that they are evaluated by a physician who is specifically trained in concussion evaluation and management. To return to play, a concussion clearance form, obtainable from the athletics website, must be completed by the physician and submitted to the athletic trainer.
Athletes diagnosed with a concussion are required to check in with the athletic trainer on a daily basis to complete a post-concussion signs and symptoms checklist. This daily monitoring is crucial for tracking recovery and ensuring athlete well-being. Furthermore, athletes who have suffered a concussion must be completely asymptomatic for a period of seven consecutive days before they can commence the five-day return-to-play protocol.
Insurance Coverage for Athletes
Glen Rock Interscholastic sports insurance provides coverage for all athletes participating in our programs. This policy acts as a rider policy, meaning it supplements the athlete’s primary insurance coverage. In the event of an injury sustained during practice or a game, the athlete must immediately notify the coach, the athletic trainer, and the school nurse.
Within 48 hours of the injury incident, the coach and athletic trainer will complete a comprehensive accident report. This report will be officially filed and kept in the nurse’s office for record-keeping and insurance purposes. The athletic trainer will issue the athletic insurance claim form only upon the request of the parent or guardian.
It is important to understand that interscholastic sports insurance operates as a secondary policy. Therefore, all medical bills related to the athletic injury must first be submitted to the athlete’s primary insurance carrier. Any remaining costs that are not covered by the primary insurance can then be submitted to the interscholastic sports insurance for potential coverage. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to manage the submission of all bills to the respective insurance companies.
