Parking is available at Lake Poway, and while it costs $10 on weekends and holidays for non-Poway residents, it’s a small price for access to this remarkable hike. Once parked in the upper parking lot, locate the trailhead near the restroom facilities. The path initially meanders around the picturesque Lake Poway, offering a gentle warm-up before the ascent begins.

Navigating the Potato Chip Rock Trail
The initial mile of the trail gracefully circles Lake Poway, providing stunning lakeside views and a relaxed start to your hike. After this pleasant prelude, you’ll reach the official trailhead, marking the beginning of the ascent to Potato Chip Rock. From this point, it’s approximately 3 miles to the summit area, where Potato Chip Rock is located. Be prepared for a consistent uphill climb; the trail gains significant elevation steadily throughout this section. It’s worth noting that shade is scarce on this trail. However, approximately halfway to the summit, you’ll discover a small tree offering a welcome respite from the sun. This little oasis provides the only significant shade on the route, making it an ideal spot for a brief rest, especially on warmer days.

Hydration is paramount for this hike. On my trips, even with consuming around three liters of water, we found ourselves running low towards the end of the descent. If you’re hiking during the hotter months, carrying ample water is non-negotiable. In fact, hiking during the peak of summer is generally not recommended due to the intense heat and lack of shade.

Reaching the Summit and Potato Chip Rock
Upon reaching the summit area of Mt. Woodson, you’re not quite at Potato Chip Rock yet. There’s still about a half-mile walk to navigate. By this point, fatigue may be setting in, but push onward – you’re almost there! The summit area itself is also a haven for rock climbers and boulderers, with numerous interesting rocks scattered around, perfect for exploring.

The actual summit of Mt. Woodson is somewhat marred by the presence of numerous antennas, which slightly detract from the otherwise stunning views. However, on a clear day, you can still enjoy expansive views of San Diego and the surrounding region.

Experiencing Potato Chip Rock
Potato Chip Rock itself is located about a quarter of a mile before the true summit of Mt. Woodson. As you approach, you’ll likely spot it in the distance, a thin sliver of rock jutting out, instantly recognizable and generating excitement.

This is undoubtedly the highlight of the hike, a geological marvel unlike anything I had encountered before. Reaching the top of Potato Chip Rock requires a bit of scrambling. While it looks incredibly precarious from afar, standing on it is surprisingly less daunting – until you hear the hollow echo of your footsteps, which can be a slightly unsettling sensation. It’s crucial to exercise caution when venturing onto Potato Chip Rock. Natural erosion is a constant process, and the rock’s stability cannot be guaranteed indefinitely. Always prioritize safety and be mindful of the potential risks.

Potato Chip Rock provides an unparalleled photo opportunity, allowing for creative and dramatic shots. However, its popularity often translates to crowds and waiting times.
