Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter delivered a record-breaking performance against Kentucky, rushing for 278 yards and leading the Tigers to a 24-10 victory. This dominant ground game, fueled by a commitment to “Pound The Rock,” propelled Auburn to a crucial SEC road win.
Hunter’s Historic Night
Hunter’s 278 rushing yards marked the fourth-best performance in Auburn history and the most in an FBS game this season. His remarkable second-half performance, with 214 yards, shattered Bo Jackson’s school record for rushing yards in a half. Hunter credited his offensive line, perimeter blockers, and coaches for their contributions to his success.
“The offensive line did an excellent job,” Hunter said. “They did their part all week in practice. The receivers did an excellent job in perimeter blocking… I give them all the praise because they made it happen for me.”
The “Pound the Rock” Philosophy
Auburn’s offensive lineman Jeremiah Wright revealed the team’s strategy going into the game: a commitment to establishing the run.
“We told Coach, starting last week, ‘Coach, let’s run the ball more. Let’s give No. 27 that rock more and pound the rock,'” Wright said. “Coach gave us an opportunity to show the run game more and we did a great job of that.”
This emphasis on physicality up front allowed Hunter to wear down the Kentucky defense as the game progressed. Hunter’s powerful running style, combined with the offensive line’s dedication to “strain and finish,” proved unstoppable.
Defensive Takeaways and Faulk’s Impact
While Hunter’s performance stole the show, Auburn’s defense also played a critical role in the victory, securing two key interceptions. Jay Crawford’s first career interception led to a field goal, while Kayin Lee’s interception in the fourth quarter sealed the win.
Sophomore defensive lineman Keldric Faulk continued his impressive season with two sacks, bringing his season total to seven. Faulk emphasized the importance of relentless effort and the synergy between the defensive line and secondary.
“Rush and coverage work together so well,” Faulk said. “When we rush well up front, our back end has enough time to make plays like they did tonight.”
Looking Ahead
With the win, Hunter eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for his career, moving into sixth place in Auburn’s all-time rushing list. The Tigers return home to face Vanderbilt, carrying momentum from their dominant performance against Kentucky and Hunter’s historic night pounding the rock.
