Rocking the Boat: Program Assistant Opportunity in San Francisco

Rocking The Boat, a non-profit youth development organization, is seeking part-time Program Assistants for its new San Francisco location in India Basin Waterfront Park. This is a unique opportunity to work with high school students, teaching valuable skills in boatbuilding, rowing, and environmental science while fostering personal growth.

About Rocking the Boat and the Program

Rocking the Boat uses boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing as mediums to empower youth. Established in the South Bronx, this $5 million organization serves approximately 5,000 community members annually. The San Francisco program, opening in Fall 2024, will replicate this successful model, providing a comprehensive after-school and summer youth development program. Program Assistants will play a vital role in delivering this impactful program to 9th and 10th grade students. The program incorporates social-emotional learning, academic support, and career counseling led by licensed social workers. This holistic approach ensures a profound and lasting impact on participants.

Responsibilities of a Program Assistant

Program Assistants will work directly with students in small groups, facilitating hands-on learning experiences. Key responsibilities include:

  • Instruction and Facilitation: Leading instruction in boatbuilding, rowing, and environmental education. This includes lesson planning, preparation, and classroom management.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Independently guiding small group activities and incorporating Rocking the Boat’s core values into daily interactions.
  • Safety and Maintenance: Ensuring adherence to safety protocols in the shop and on the water, maintaining tools and equipment, and organizing the workspace.
  • Trip Leadership: Assisting with day and overnight trips designed to enhance the program experience.
  • Behavior Management: Creating a safe and effective learning environment through positive behavior management techniques.

Qualifications and Skills

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Leadership and Initiative: Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, taking initiative to achieve goals.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, enabling effective interaction with supervisors, coworkers, and students.

Benefits and Compensation

Rocking the Boat offers:

  • Competitive Hourly Rate: $18 to $21 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Paid Time Off: Accrual of up to 40 hours of Safe and Sick time per year.
