History Woven into the Heart of Starved Rock State Park
Starved Rock State Park first opened its doors to the public in 1911, marking the beginning of a rich history. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) embarked on the construction of Starved Rock Lodge and its initial 16 cabins, a project that culminated in the lodge’s grand opening in 1939. Designed by the architect Joseph F. Booten, the Starved Rock Lodge was rightfully recognized for its historical significance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1985.
The Great Hall stands as the lodge’s centerpiece, featuring an awe-inspiring two-sided limestone fireplace, the largest of its kind in Illinois. The lodge’s exterior, meticulously preserved, showcases Joliet limestone, rugged unhewn logs, traditional clapboard, and classic wood shingles. The same unhewn logs define the construction of the 16 original cabins, nestled harmoniously within the surrounding woods. Even with modern updates and changes over time, Starved Rock Lodge and its cabins have steadfastly maintained the original charm and aesthetic vision conceived by its architect, offering guests a timeless experience.
