Big Rock Township is committed to providing residents with efficient and reliable waste and recycling collection services. Groot is the service provider for curbside collection in the township. This guide outlines the details of the program to ensure smooth and convenient waste disposal and recycling for all households in Big Rock Township.
Curbside Collection Program
Each residence in Big Rock Township benefits from weekly curbside collection of refuse and recycling. Collections are scheduled every Tuesday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. To facilitate this service, each household is provided with Groot carts. The standard allocation includes one 95-gallon refuse cart and one 65-gallon recycling cart, provided at no additional charge.
For instances where refuse exceeds the capacity of the provided cart, additional bags or cans will be collected. These should be in plastic bags or galvanized metal or plastic cans, not exceeding 32 gallons in capacity, equipped with two handles, and weighing no more than 50 pounds. For households with consistent extra refuse needs, additional Groot carts are available for a supplementary fee.
Bulk Item Collection
Big Rock Township residents can also take advantage of weekly curbside collection for bulk items. The service includes collection of 2 bulk items or up to 3 bundles of construction debris per week, each weighing under 50 lbs. This weekly service is designed for items that can be safely managed by a single Groot collector. Items heavier than 50 lbs may incur an additional charge.
Acceptable bulk items include a variety of household objects such as boxes, barrels, crates, furniture, and similar items. These are defined as items too large to fit into standard containers and manageable for collection by one person without assistance. However, certain items are prohibited from direct landfill disposal and are excluded from bulk collection. These exceptions include appliances, tires, car batteries, televisions, and electronic waste.
For items considered oversized or overweight, such as pianos, hot tubs, or anything requiring two or more people to lift, residents need to schedule a special pick-up with Groot. These special collections will involve an additional fee per item due to the specialized handling required.
White Goods Collection
Residents of Big Rock Township can arrange for the weekly collection of white goods, which include appliances. It is necessary to schedule a special collection for these items by calling Groot directly. Regardless of their size and weight, all appliances or white goods require a scheduled pick up. This service is provided at no additional charge to residents.
Christmas Tree Collection
Following the holiday season, Big Rock Township provides a dedicated collection for Christmas trees. This service is available during the first two weeks of January each year. Residents can place their Christmas trees curbside for collection at no charge during this period.
Construction and Demolition Debris
For residents undertaking home projects, Big Rock Township accommodates the collection of construction and demolition debris. Each week, Groot will collect one cubic yard of construction debris at no charge, as an alternative to one bulk item. For amounts exceeding one cubic yard, collection can be arranged at a per cubic yard rate, requiring advance scheduling. To facilitate collection, construction debris must be cut into lengths no longer than 4 feet and diameters no greater than 2 feet. It should be bundled or placed in an approved container that does not exceed 50 pounds in weight.
Senior Citizens Discount
Big Rock Township offers a discount on the Curbside Collection Program for senior citizens. Single-family households where the head of the household is 65 years of age or older are eligible for a reduced collection rate. To qualify for this senior discount, residents must provide proof of age and home ownership, along with a valid ID.
Observed Holidays
Please note the following holidays observed by Groot, which may affect the collection schedule:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July

If a holiday falls on a weekday, specifically on or before your scheduled Tuesday collection day, service will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week. Residents of Big Rock Township are encouraged to keep these holiday observances in mind when planning for waste and recycling collection.
