Castle Rock State Park is a celebrated destination for rock climbers, primarily due to its remarkable sandstone formations. However, it’s crucial for climbers to RESPECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE ROCK AND THE CLIMB. The park’s signature “Tafone” formations, honeycomb-like structures in the sandstone, are exceptionally delicate and require careful interaction. Climbers are urged to refrain from damaging these formations, which means avoiding actions such as removing loose rock, chipping, gluing, or any alteration of the natural rock surface.
The sandstone at Castle Rock is particularly vulnerable to damage when wet. Climbing on damp rock can drastically change routes and accelerate erosion, as the sandstone becomes significantly more fragile. Therefore, climbing activities may be restricted based on weather conditions. A measurable amount of rainfall, as determined by the Castle Rock Kirkwood Office, can lead to the closure of climbing areas for up to three days under District Superintendent Closure Order #715-002-20. Climbers should always check trail conditions before visiting and adhere to any posted closures to protect both the rock formations and ensure climber safety.
Planning Your Visit to Castle Rock State Park: Essential Information
When planning a trip to Castle Rock State Park, keep in mind some important basic information to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.
FEES: There is a $10 vehicle day-use fee. It’s advisable to bring cash as payment. The fee structure is as follows: Regular Sized Auto: $10 (Senior $9, for visitors aged 62 or older); Bus Parking (10-24 passengers): $50; Bus Parking (25+ passengers): $100. Please note that there is no visitor center or store within Castle Rock State Park to purchase permits or get change.
NO CELL RECEPTION: Be aware that there is no cell phone service within the park and in the surrounding areas. Due to this lack of connectivity, relying on ridesharing services to enter or depart the park is not recommended. Plan your transportation accordingly.
PET POLICY: To protect the park’s wildlife and natural environment, dogs are prohibited throughout Castle Rock State Park, with the exception of service animals. For visitors wishing to bring dogs, nearby Sanborn County Park is a dog-friendly alternative.
HORSEBACK RIDING: Horseback riding is permitted on the Saratoga Toll Road, which stretches from Saratoga Gap and connects to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. This trail offers equestrians a scenic route through the park’s landscape.
BICYCLING: Bicycles are allowed on the Skyline Trail (part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail), located on the northern side of Highway 35. This provides cyclists with opportunities to enjoy the park’s trails.
DRONE RESTRICTIONS: For the safety of visitors, protection of wildlife and cultural resources, and to maintain the park’s peaceful environment, drones are not allowed within Castle Rock State Park. This includes all Model Aircraft, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Gliders.
PROHIBITED ITEMS: Glass containers and smoking are prohibited throughout the park to prevent litter and reduce fire hazards. Firearms and weapons of any kind, including BB guns, spears, bows, arrows, and slingshots, are also prohibited to ensure visitor safety and wildlife protection.
FIRE REGULATIONS: Fires are only permitted in designated fire rings at the Castle Rock Trail Camp during the rainy season. Currently, fires are NOT PERMITTED. Gathering firewood within the park, including twigs and leaves, is also prohibited to protect the natural habitat. Firewood can be purchased at the Castle Rock Trail Camp when fires are allowed.
RESPECT FOR NATURE AND PRIVATE PROPERTY: Visitors are reminded to respect private property boundaries and remain on designated trails. It is crucial to remember that natural & cultural features are protected by law. Do not pick wildflowers, mushrooms, or any other plants, and do not remove any rocks or park features. Graffiti, disturbing wildlife, or feeding animals is also prohibited.
