Fans across the United Kingdom are reeling from the news that legendary rock band Journey has canceled its highly anticipated tour. Just weeks after electrifying audiences at Hersheypark Stadium, the band announced the abrupt cancellation, citing circumstances beyond their control. However, reports are now surfacing that point to a significant internal conflict as the real reason behind the tour’s demise.
The turmoil reportedly stems from a legal clash between long-time bandmates, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and lead guitarist Neal Schon. For years, tensions have simmered between the two, and these have now boiled over into a legal battle concerning Freedom 2020, the company managing the band’s tour finances. Both Cain and Schon hold equal 50% stakes in this venture, but according to KRQE Albuquerque, a fundamental disagreement regarding the company’s operations and management has led Cain to seek judicial intervention.
Adding fuel to the fire, iHeart Radio reports Cain’s allegations that Schon “maxed out the band’s American Express credit card, which has a $1 million limit.” This financial dispute appears to be at the heart of the legal battle, directly leading to the cancellation of the UK and Ireland tour dates scheduled for October. The band’s official statement to fans alluded to “circumstances beyond the band’s control,” masking the deeper conflict within.
Despite the canceled European leg, Journey is still slated to complete the North American portion of their tour with Def Leppard. Their schedule includes a performance in Arlington on August 12th and at least nine more dates. These remaining shows may carry an undercurrent of tension as the legal proceedings unfold publicly. The cancellation serves as a stark reminder that even legendary rock bands can face internal challenges that impact their global tours and fan engagements.
