River Rock Roasting Company: Your Must-Stop Destination for St. George Biking Adventures

St. George, Utah, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and if you’re a biker, you’re in for a treat. The stunning landscapes, featuring red rocks, canyons, and the Virgin River, create an unforgettable backdrop for both road and mountain biking. During a recent 60-mile road biking excursion and mountain biking exploration around St. George, the breathtaking scenery was constantly on display. And amidst these adventures, one place stood out as the perfect refueling and viewpoint destination: River Rock Roasting Company.

Road Biking Bliss and Virgin River Views at River Rock Roasting Company

Our road biking loop, stretching approximately 60 miles with around 2500 feet of climbing, showcased the diverse terrain around St. George. Guided by a local expert, we embarked on the Toquerville / La Verkin route, a sampler of highways and quieter byways. Taking the scenic Route 7, a low-traffic gem, we connected to Sand Hollow Road (known for its somewhat rough surface) near Sand Hollow Reservoir, a notable Half-Ironman location. This path led us to State Street/Highway 9. While Highway 9 is a major road with fast-moving traffic, it’s manageable, especially if you time your ride for a less busy period, perhaps a Sunday morning.

Reaching the halfway point of our road biking loop was more than just a break; it was a highlight thanks to River Rock Roasting Company. Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Virgin River in La Verkin, this spot is a visual feast. River Rock Roasting Company isn’t just about the views, though. It’s a haven for cyclists and travelers alike, offering exceptional coffee, delicious food, and a selection of brews. If you’re cycling or simply exploring the St. George area, River Rock Roasting Company is an absolute must-visit. It’s truly my top recommendation for coffee, food, drinks, and those incredible Virgin River views. Be aware that it’s incredibly popular, especially on Sundays, so consider a weekday visit for a more relaxed experience.

Our return journey along State Street/9 included another scenic stop at Quail Creek State Park and Reservoir. This reservoir is not only picturesque but also offers swimming, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and even fishing. While a swim wasn’t on the agenda this time, it’s definitely planned for the future! Quail Creek is deep and well-stocked with various fish species, making it a fantastic spot for recreation.

Mountain Biking Near St. George and Desert Canyon Views

Our mountain biking exploration was slightly limited by recent rain, but we were keen to discover the local trails. The Desert Canyons Trail System, a newer development, proved to be a great option given the conditions. We explored Pushing Tin and Secret Sauce, two trails rated easy to moderate, providing enjoyable rides with mesa-top views stretching to the horizon. These trails offer a unique perspective of the desert landscape, although it’s worth noting that the surrounding area is planned for future development. For now, these mountain bike trails offer a fantastic escape and open views.

While our mountain biking sampler was brief, the Desert Canyons trails hinted at the extensive mountain biking opportunities around St. George. We were told of many more epic trails in the area, promising future adventures.

Whether you’re hitting the road or the trails in St. George, make sure River Rock Roasting Company is on your itinerary. It’s more than just a coffee stop; it’s an experience that perfectly complements the outdoor beauty of Southern Utah. Both our road and mountain biking experiences around St. George get a resounding two thumbs up, and River Rock Roasting Company played a significant role in making them so memorable.
