Remembering Jake Baker: Slippery Rock Football Standout and Cherished Son

Jacob James Baker, affectionately known as Jake, passed away on May 23, 2024, at the young age of 22. Born on January 11, 2002, in Rockville, MD, to James E. and Karen (Smits) Baker, Jake’s life, though brief, was filled with passion, athleticism, and love. While his life touched many areas, he is particularly remembered for his dedication and talent on the football field, especially during his time with Slippery Rock University.

Jake Baker’s Impact on Slippery Rock Football

Jake Baker made a significant mark during his year at Slippery Rock University, where he played defensive end for The Rock. His contributions were instrumental in the team’s successful 2023 season, which saw them clinch the PSAC West title and advance to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. As a marketing major, Jake also excelled academically, earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors, demonstrating his commitment both on and off the field. Prior to his time at Slippery Rock, Jake also spent a year playing football at Towson University and two years at Clarion University, further showcasing his dedication to the sport.

His football journey began in high school at Catoctin High School, where his athletic prowess was evident. Beyond football, Jake was also a talented wrestler, achieving the remarkable feat of winning a state championship, highlighting his versatility and competitive spirit in athletics.

Beyond the Gridiron: Jake’s Diverse Interests

While Jake’s accomplishments in football, particularly with Slippery Rock, were notable, his life extended beyond the sport. He possessed a creative spirit, enjoying drawing and artwork. He also found joy in outdoor activities like kayaking and fishing, and had a knack for tinkering, whether it was working on his truck or indulging in hobbies like building Lego kits and engaging in playful nerf gun battles. These diverse interests reveal a well-rounded individual who embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Family, Friends, and Honoring Jake’s Memory

Jake is survived by his loving parents, Jim and Karen, and his sister, Alyssa M. Baker, all of Thurmont, MD. He is also fondly remembered by his paternal grandmother, Patricia L. Baker, maternal grandparents James H. and Mary Smits, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and teammates. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, James E. Baker Sr.

Friends and family gathered to celebrate Jake’s life at funeral services held in Delmont and Latrobe, PA. A local celebration of Jake’s life is planned for June 30, 2024, at Thorpewood in Thurmont, MD, offering an opportunity to share memories and stories in his honor.
