Honouring the Living Rock: A Land Acknowledgement for Rockscapes.net

Rockscapes.net respectfully acknowledges that we operate on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Anishinabek Nation, and the Attiwonderonk Nation. These lands, the very foundation of what we explore and appreciate at Rockscapes, have been stewarded for countless generations by Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island. Their enduring connection to this land, their deep understanding of its rhythms and resources, and their commitment to preserving it, are integral to the history and spirit of this place.

These territories are governed by Treaty 3, the 1792 Between-the-Lakes Purchase, and the profound principles of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant. This covenant, encompassing much of Ontario, embodies the vital understanding that resources are to be shared responsibly and sustainably, ensuring abundance for all living beings, both present and future. This principle of shared stewardship is especially relevant to the relationship between settlers and Indigenous Peoples, requiring ongoing dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the land we all inhabit.

From time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have been the caretakers of this land, the Living Rock beneath our feet. As Rockscapes.net, we recognize the importance of acknowledging this history, giving thanks for the land’s bounty, and working collaboratively with the original land owners towards genuine reconciliation. This includes actively learning about Indigenous history and perspectives, understanding the lasting impacts of colonialism, and amplifying Indigenous voices.

True allyship requires more than just presence; it demands active listening, transparency, respect, and unwavering solidarity with Indigenous communities. As inhabitants of this land, we are all connected by the same earth, drawing sustenance from the same sources. We must confront the ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and actively work to dismantle systems of oppression. By protecting and honouring Indigenous rights and knowledge, we safeguard not only their future, but the future of the living rock we all depend upon. Guided by the wisdom of thinking seven generations ahead, rockscapes.net commits to standing as allies in action, building a future grounded in respect, reciprocity, and shared responsibility for this land we call home.
